Darvasa's gate to hell was discovered by soviet geologists in 1971 accidentally while drilling into a cavern filled with natural gas, the ground beneath the rig collapsed leaving a 70 meters wide hole (230 ft) this hole releases methane which is relatively potent greenhouse gas and can be a high global warming potential to earth. To avoid the poisonous gas discharge the geologist decided to burn it off to use all the fuel in a matter of days but the gas is still burning up to this day.
